Among other things, a French Foil has a straight, narrow blade. Katana swords have flat curved blades. In addition, typically in French Foil competitions both participants are limited to a very narrow strip of floor space. As a result, you cannot move in circles or try to get behind your opponent. On the other hand, there is very little limit to the movements that can be made in contests featuring Katana swords.
