Don’t Let Your Dog Walk You

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Brought to you by:  dog housebreaking pads, now learn all about teaching your dog the right way to walk with you:

Be Unpredictable

Making quick and abrupt turns in the opposite direction anytime your dog starts to get ahead of you will teach him to pay attention to where you’re going. Praise him lavishly when he returns to your side and even reward with a small treat if your dog is food motivated. The idea is to stop the pulling before it even starts by catching him off guard. Be calm, no need to scold him, he’ll figure it out.

You may have to turn around forty times in the first session and barely make it half way down the driveway, but don’t worry, it will get better the more you practice. Many dogs catch on quickly to this game and start to watch their owner closely to see what they’ll do next. A dog that’s paying attention to you isn’t pulling on the leash.

Set The Rules

And stick to them! Decide once and for all that you will not allow him to pull and then react anytime he tries to move ahead of you. This means you’ll have to be watching him closely during the first couple sessions. Allowing him to pull sometimes but not all the time will only confuse your dog. Look at your next couple walks as training experiences, not exercise. Once your dog gets the hang of it then you can start to plan on moving past the driveway.

Practice, Distract, and Practice Some More When caring for elderly dogs

Teaching good leash walking skills is an ongoing process. You may always need to ‘be unpredictable’ every once in a while even after your dog understands what you expect. Keep him on his toes and keep practicing. Don’t be stingy with the praise, let him know when he’s doing the right thing and you’ll start to see more of that behavior.

Things that are a necessity for pets

Monday, October 6th, 2008

When my brother-in-law got married a lot of things came from his in-laws place. There were separate trays made of wood for each member of the family. Every tray had the name written on top for whom it was sent. Each tray had dresses and perfumes. There were two trays which had dry fruits and snacks. After everybody had opened their tray one was still left. Out of curiosity we opened and were amazed to see a collar, a leash, two lovely bowls and some chew resistant toys. The wooden tray was the bed. All these Dog Accessories were for our pet dog Raja.

If Your Cat Goes Outside, You Need a Cat Flea Collar!

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Some cats need a cat flea collar. These are not very pretty, but if you have a cat that goes outside, or your cat lives with a dog  that goes outside, these might be a good idea. There are newer treatments out there today for problems with fleas that are much more effective and do not require the cat collar for flea protection, but some still prefer the collar. If you use these, remember they are not going to last forever. If you feel the need to protect from fleas, remember to read the box about how often to replace the collar for the most protection.

Leader of the pack

Friday, September 19th, 2008

For a long time now I have become more and more convinced that my pointer dog, Maxie, looks upon me as being like a father figure or an older brother. He was always very loyal and loving, but over the last few years, he has become even more so. He seems to want to protect me and sometimes I feel that he is a little jealous of the children and even my wife. He has never shown any aggression towards them, or even close to it. I just feel that he would like me all to himself. I felt that it was responsibility to talk to my family vet about it, so I gave her a call. She told me that what had happened was that the dog, in his own way, had appointed me as leader of the pack, of which my wife and children were also members. She assured me that the dog would never do anything to harm his fellow pack members, but would get a little put out if he felt that anyone else in the “pack” was getting undue attention. I called a family (or pack) conference and we discussed this surprising new development. We all agreed that we would now treat Maxie with the same love and respect that he had been treating us. When I asked the kids if they would also treat me as leader of the pack, they politely declined.

Is all natural dog food the way to go?

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Many dog owners make homemade meals for their dogs using raw meats and vegetables, eggs, cheeses and a variety of homemade treats. Some dog owners even choose to feed their dogs a strictly vegetarian diet.  A dogs system gains the maximum benefits from meat and bones in their naturally raw state. Many dog foods are manufactured so poorly; vitamins must be added to them in supplement form. However, once the dog food is cooked down or heated, packaged, and sold, most of these added vitamins have been lost.  Dog feeding tips

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Though there are many dog lovers out there who gasp at the thought of using pre-made dog food, there are still many dog lovers who swear by dry dog food. There are many, many brands of dog food out there and many manufactures. No-one will be able to tell you what the best one is but they can offer advice on a dogs dietery needs. You and are dog will have to work together as a team. You can do your part by carefully reading the labels on the food you are going to buy. Remember cheaper is not always better. A lot of times the cheaper brands add a lot of fillers and use cheap ingredients. The more premium dog foods tend to use better ingredients with no fillers. Your dog is going to do their part by letting you know if they like the food or not.
